Remaking this meal was probably the one was looking forward to the least. Not because it’s difficult or any of that. It just sounds and looks really disgusting. I’m not the biggest fan of beans so my skin is just crawling with the idea of this one. I’m going to start off with what I thought was Franks and Beans. I thought it was beans on toast. I was way off.
I knew from the start that I wouldn’t be able to just wing this one and that I had to find some sort of recipe online. It was then when I learned what Franks and Beans truly were. I still don’t like the look of it. Finding a recipe was easy enough although to make it gluten free so I could actually taste it I had to make very small changes. I also had to look some things up because what the hell is molasses? Okay so by a quick glance on Google, Molasses looks like a sweetener. It did pop up that I could buy it at the health store close by but I couldn’t immediately see if it was gluten free. Maybe I should just make this meal as is and then use the excuse that I couldn’t find a gluten free option for this and that. I mean then I won’t be able to taste this. The husband can eat it. Insert evil cackles. And that thought didn’t last two seconds. Turns out this molasses is gluten-free. Fuck. We still have ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. We don’t really have these products in the house mostly because taste wise they are not my favorites. Looking at this ingredient list is only making me less excited to make this dish. So many gross ingredients are going into this. Can’t I just get a can of beans, some hot dog sausages, throw some onion and sugar in and let it boil? Do I have to go super fancy with this one? It’s going to work out so expensive. I will have to buy ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, mustard and Worcestershire sauce just for the basics of the recipe and for what? One tablespoon of this and that? What a waste. As you can tell I’m not excited about this one. I’m going to look online a bit more and see what I can find. I really love the idea of this challenge but I also don’t want to be wasteful. I know that we won’t finish some of these products and I just can’t convince the poor South African in me to spend an easy 10 euros on products to only throw away more than half of it. The struggle is real. When I started to look into different recipes and variations of making this, I gathered that almost every recipe required mustard, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. At this point, I’ve done enough research and now it’s only a matter of deciding how far I want to take this challenge and actually make some version of Franks and Beans.
Some time has passed and I decided that I should at least look into some substitutes for mustard, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce before I just make the franks and beans my way. Turns out it was relatively easy to find substitutes for almost each of the main ingredients with products I already have in the house. For the mustard, I simply had to replace it with mayonnaise of equal amount. We always have mayonnaise in the house. The Dutch love to eat mayonnaise with their fries. For the ketchup it was just a simple; 1 cup of tomato sauce, ¼ cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of vinegar. The Worcestershire sauce was a little more complicated. The website I found (linked down below) for the Worcestershire sauce substitute was incredibly informative and after browsing the sight I decided to wing the making of this sauce. Raise hands if any of you are surprised. I gathered that as long as I use lime, honey, onion, garlic, chili powder, and vinegar I will get a similar taste. Honestly, my main goal was to use as much of products I already had in the house so I didn’t have to buy too many things, especially for this meal.
The first part of this blog was just me thinking out loud on how to make this franks and beans and what I think I would need. Some things changed when I went to the shops. I ended up buying beans, ketchup, and hotdogs. I worked off the recipe (the link will be down below) and just kind of winged it. This is what I did.
I started off by cutting up one onion and cutting up one piece of garlic. I mixed this with two tablespoons of sugar and one teaspoon of white vinegar. The garlic and vinegar would be the substitute of the Worcestershire sauce. I skipped out on the cayenne pepper as the beans had some heat to it. I also forgot about the lime and honey. Oops. I added the beans, half of the hotdogs in the can with a sauce mixture of 3 tablespoons of ketchup (was cheaper to just buy ketchup) and one tablespoon of mayo (substitute of the mustard). I will add that it was a bit too much mayo and the mixture looked a little light in color.
I popped it into the oven at 150°C for two hours. It did two things at this time. 1) It darkened and started to look more like the Sims and the picture. 2) It stank up the entire house.
Onno was the first to try it. His words: “It’s not that bad.” I was less than excited to try it mostly because it looked so gross. Onno had to forcefully help me. My words after tasting it: “It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever tasted and it’s definitely not the best thing I’ve ever tasted. It’s okay. Or just little below okay. I won’t make it again though.” I seriously doubt we will make this again, taste aside, it made my husband fart a lot. It was some potent stuff. No thanks.
The Sims version of this meal was ridiculously easy to make. Susan barely broke a sweat making it but I do want to add it made her gassy as well. She just went straight to the stove top, mixed it a bit and then it was done. Lucky. We had to air out our house after making this.
Before we rate this one, let’s compare the two.
Taste: 4/10 – It gets a low score because for the two of us personally, it’s not our favorite. I hate the look and texture of it but I was okay with it. I won’t make it again but let’s just say I would rather eat this than olives or broccoli.
Look: 8/10 – I’m giving it a high score because it really does look franks and beans and quite similar to the Sims meal. There isn’t much else I can say. Personally, it looked like a 1/10 in my books but that’s just because I don’t like beans.
How easy it is to cook: 10/10 – It’s really easy and quick to make. I just had to cut up a few things and mix all of the ingredients together. I love meals that I can just mix and put in the oven. Barely no effort.
